Well-being check

Check in on student well-being and spot any obstacles to learning
What are they:

Well-being checks are an important part of a teacher's remit in checking on their students’ experience while learning. They help teachers understand how their students are going, how their engagement and happiness levels are in class.

A study from the OECD finds that students who perceive greater support from teachers perform better academically.

Asking questions in an unobtrusive way helps teachers understand if there are any school or non-school related obstacles to learning their students are facing, and react accordingly.

Benefits:
  • Provides important insight into students’ state of mind
  • Creates unobtrusive and authentic dialogue for students to share issues related to well-being
  • Have their learning experience understood and accounted for holistically
  • Gives students an opportunity to voice issues and challenges
  • Improves student social interactions and satisfaction

Example questions:

  • Discuss class-wide issues with the class if there is a theme or issue relevant to all students
  • Identify students with unsatisfactory responses and address those issues
  • Take further action beyond the classroom if needed (e.g. provide or suggest additional resources to support the student.
